About

Technical tuning work - Pianos Wallenstein Precision adjustment on piano - Pianos Wallenstein

My journey in piano tuning and repair began at 18 in Lisbon, under the guidance of Paulo Pimentel, one of the most recognized tuners in Portugal.

At 19, I continued my training at the prestigious ITEMM school in Le Mans, France. After training, I worked in England, gaining valuable international experience.

Back in Portugal, I joined Ébano e Marfim, where I developed the entire repair and restoration area over several years, setting up from scratch a specialized workshop for high-level work.

With almost two decades of experience and national and international recognition, I put all my knowledge and technical rigor at the service of each piano, treating each instrument as a unique piece that deserves dedication and excellence.

Continuous training and knowledge exchange with international reference technicians are fundamental pillars of my work, ensuring that Pianos Wallenstein is always at the forefront of the profession's best practices.

During my time as workshop manager at Ébano e Marfim, I coordinated prestigious restorations in partnership with the National Music Museum, including Luís de Freitas Branco's Bechstein piano and the Orquestrion, on display in Mafra.

Our Team

Pianos Wallenstein currently has Afonso Wallenstein and Diogo Picão, apprentice in training.

Diogo Picão

Musician, composer and singer-songwriter born in 1988, Diogo Picão holds a degree in Music from ESMAE and is the author of two acclaimed albums: "Cidade Saloia" (2018) and "Palavras Caras" (2022, Antena 1 Record), the latter presented at Teatro Maria Matos to a full house with guest appearances by Salvador Sobral, Mônica Salmaso and Luca Argel.

Since the beginning of 2025, Diogo began his training as a piano technician with Afonso Wallenstein, joining the Pianos Wallenstein team. His perspective as an active musician enriches the technical work, combining artistic and sound sensitivity with professional training.

Services

Tuning

Regular tuning is essential to preserve the quality and value of your piano. Due to use and changes in temperature and humidity, the instrument's tuning naturally fluctuates over time.

We recommend tuning at least once a year for domestic use, and two or more times a year for pianos in intensive use (schools, concert halls, theaters, recording studios). Regular tunings make the process faster and are essential for students' auditory development.

With extensive experience working regularly with the best national and international pianists, in all musical styles, we combine artisanal experience with the most modern technological tools, ensuring exceptional precision and quality.

Repair and Restoration

Specialization in all types of repairs, from replacing worn parts in your longtime instrument to complete restoration, giving your piano a new life.

Customized Hammer Replacement

We have developed a hammer replacement process with detailed weight study, recreating the specific touch of your piano by adapting the exact weight of the new hammer set. This method allows us to achieve exceptional quality results in touch and sound.

We work in a specialized workshop equipped for high-level interventions, ensuring that each piano receives the attention and technical care it deserves.

Maintenance

Regular maintenance is essential to ensure the quality and longevity of your instrument over time.

We offer half-day, full-day or longer check-up services that include complete regulation of keyboard and action e voicing. Regulation ensures uniform response and balanced dynamics note by note, while voicing — through meticulous work of needling the hammers and adjusting their shape and density — allows achieving the desired timbre and significantly increasing the instrument's performance.

These check-ups include detailed evaluation, necessary adjustments and personalized recommendations to keep your piano in the best conditions.

Klangmanufaktur (2026)

These trainings complement practical experience with cutting-edge knowledge, ensuring that Pianos Wallenstein always stays updated with the profession's best international practices.

Historical Restoration: Luís de Freitas Branco's Piano

During his time as workshop manager at Ébano e Marfim, Afonso Wallenstein coordinated and executed the historical restoration of the 1920 Bechstein model B piano, belonging to Portuguese composer Luís de Freitas Branco (1890-1955).

This restoration included direct partnership with Bechstein for the exclusive manufacture of hammers according to the original period specifications and bass strings manufactured specifically for this instrument.

The piano is now on display at the National Music Museum in Mafra, in the room "The invention of the future", next to the Taskin harpsichord (1782), one of the national treasures.
